Urlaub Cornwall guide to the best dog friendly beaches for holiday with a dog on the north coast of Cornwall

UrlaubCornwall have selected some  great dog friendly beaches on the northcoast of Cornwall.

Perranporth  and Perran Sands– Excellent for long beach walks as these two wide sandy beaches cover a very large area. Perranporth is a popular family holiday spot on the north coast, but allows dogs on the beach all year round. The town has plenty of facilities for dogs and people alike, with dog friendly shops, pubs and cafés.

Fistral Beach – This surfer’s paradise is perhaps Cornwall’s most famous beach, and one of the main reasons people visit Newquay. The beach is dog friendly all year, so you can walk your dog along the wide, flat sands whilst the water is busy with surfers and bodyboarders.  The beach is big enough for you to find your family plenty of space.

Crantock Beach – A short journey west from Newquay along the north coast is Crantock Bay. The sandy beach is popular with families, but not as busy as the beaches in central Newquay.  Access to the beach from the car park is through some quite steep sand dunes, but they shouldn’t be a problem for most people or dogs. There is a National Trust and beach shop at Crantock, which remains dog friendly all year.

Summerleaze Beach – This sandy beach is ideal for short walks, close to the centre of Bude. Dogs are welcome all year but must be on a lead during the daytime from the end of May to the end of September.

Mevagissey is a  typically traditional Cornish fishing village, where you can wander the narrow alleyways, browse gift shops and art galleries. Once the home of the Cornish sardine fishery it still boasts a working fleet that bring in a selection of the fish that Cornwall is famous for.

Each year at the end of June, Mevagissey celebrates Feast Week, a week of family fun, music, and floral dances through the streets; ending in a carnival and  fireworks display.

Mevagissey is within the Cornwall Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty which along with National Parks, are considered to be the most special landscapes in the country and belong to an international family of protected areas.

Inside, the main sitting-room has a wall of windows overlooking the garden to the harbour and beach below, a fabulous view shared by the master bedroom and sitting/dining-room. Here, patio doors open onto a balcony where you can breakfast at leisure before strolling to the sandy beach for a day of paddling and sandcastle building.

The Eden Project, Heligan Gardens and Mevagissey are nearby, while the Roseland peninsula beckons and the sailing town of St Mawes offers award-winning restaurants, pubs, galleries, shops and ferry trips.

A holiday house or cottage is a perfect base for many of Cornwall’s most popular attractions and scenic towns. The largely unspoiled village with its amazingly well preserved Georgian port, now a living museum, is still a working port but is predominantly famous as a home to majestic tall ships, used extensively in historical films.

With the Eden Project, Heligan Gardens and the sailing town of Fowey only short car jaunts away, there is plenty to keep everyone happy, but if filming is taking place you may just want to sit on the harbour and watch the magnificent sailing ships elegantly manoeuvre out in the bay.

Semi-detached Crow’s Nest is found in the evocatively historic setting of Charlestown on the south Cornish coast. Crow’s Nest, sleeping up to 6 and a cot, it is set just yards from the water, in a quiet residential lane that borders a tiny stream at the. Decorated with soft neutral colours giving a restful air, the cottage is perfect for families and friends alike.

The open plan living-room has a door out to an enclosed garden and patio, lovely for breakfast or evening drinks. The large en suite bedroom has a dressing-room (ideal for a travel cot) while the double and twin bedrooms share the family bathroom.

The seaside towns of Barnstaple and Bideford make great places for a holiday in a cottage, but for the full Atlantic Highway experience you must continue your drive into Cornwall.

After passing the beaches of Bude you will see the historic Tintagel, reputed home of legendary King Arthur. Further west you travel across northern tip of Bodmin Moor and through the small town of Camelford, before you get to Wadebridge and the turning for the world famous restaurants of Padstow.

As you reach the end of the Highway in the centre of Cornwall, you will have seen some of the most picturesque countryside in Britain.

The A39 continues past the end of the traditional Atlantic Highway through Truro and finally ends up on the south coast at Falmouth. Or you can take the A30 towards Land’s End to continue your tour of Cornwall.
